Last Saturday my son Ryan (5) asked to have a tea party. Ryan says lots of things that are off the wall, so I mentally washed that comment aside. By about noon he had asked at least 4 more times. My son apparently has learned his father does not hear his requests until repeated multiple times. So point taken.
We finished a number of errands; Jamba Juice for breakfast (that was a good, fun, low cost choice by the way), grocery store, and Costco. I finished unloading supplies. Daughter was on the Mac. Son was watching TV. I am now left thinking, tea party? I pulled the small play table to the kitchen and some chairs. I served chilled Snapple tea in little white tea cups (I realized during this process I no longer have a china tea pot - where do things just disappear to?). For snacks it was Bao and mini blue berry muffins. When the kids realized what I was doing there was visible excitement at the idea.
We sat down and politely drank our tea and had our snacks. We talked and laughed a little (mostly the kids at me when I drank my tea with my pinkie held out). It was one of the better lunch decisions I had made in awhile.

That story bought a smile to my face. It is so refreshing to hear a dad bring imagination and childishness to life. Your kids will remember these moments and hopefully they will influence how they interact with you for the rest of their lives.
I love this post. Your mindfulness is an inspiration to me!
