Twitter no more

Twitter was a fun diversion. It allowed me to meet people in different parts of the country and world and see little moving pictures of their life.

I have decided though that Twitter is also a distraction. I went from zero to sixty in 3.2 seconds. Every twitter was sent to my cell phone as SMS. it literally never shut up, getting 200-300+ per day. It was distracting me from the now in my life.

I worked down my following list from about 125 to 21.

I did end up limiting the SMS to only about 4 users. These were folks that I had met and was reading their blogs; in general had a much higher level of interest in their lives.

The issue again was distraction. At the end of the day I have a limited amount of focus to give to any one thing; my family, my relationship with my wife, my career, any new religion I feel I need to be a part of… you get the point. I have now turned off all SMS from twitter and do not plan on updating anymore.

Akula & Whim (husband and wife +3 kids growing up in Seattle)

CocoKraft (Mother/Wife to family of 2 kids + Au Pair ver 2.0 in DC)

Capnkid (Web Dev / Sailor / Drinker of Rum)

I will continue to follow their blogs, as well as a couple of others I have met on Twitter, as I do feel these do add value to my life.

  1. Well, bummer. But I understand. I never sent messages to my phone, but even then it can be a big distraction. My use of Twitter goes up and down. I don’t know how long it will last. Either way, you’ll be missed. But I’m glad you’ll continue to blog.

  2. booo. no more boba or food updates. it’s funny how i enjoy picturing friends of mine doing whatever it is they write about on twitter. =]

you will indeed be missed. Some distractions are colorful threads in the rich tapestry of life. Feel free to use that in your poetry. Time for more rum.

  4. You will be missed on Twitter, but I am glad to keep in touch via blogs. I go through ups and downs with Twitter. Some weeks I check it a few times a day and then I will go a week or two without pulling it up once.

I hope you liked your salsa. I have plans to post about making and canning applesauce…but other things likes kids and a messy house keep getting in the way. :)

  5. {{{sigh}}} so that’s what’s going on …

My friend, you are Twitter to me!

That far away male that “got it.”

Your camping gig still inspires me, Jeff.

I guess the “140 characters or less” exchanges weren’t that meaningful, but your poet’s soul came through in spite of all the b.s. and self-promotion.

I follow cap’n kid and Akula because of you, I think…

    Kim N? Follow?

  6. Thank you.

I think I got too wrapped up in Twitter and started to lose sight of some of the great things that are happening right now in my life around me.

And yes, Kim (Akula’s wife) is one to follow as well. Her blog is fun to read as well (kids / family / kitchen… how can you go wrong).

  7. Hey! We’ll miss you on Twitter :) I fell away from it for a bit too.. it is quite consuming.
