Don’t judge.
I made my first attempt at Spam musubi. While I have made Nigiri-zushi and Hand rolls at home a couple of time, Spam has never entered the conversation.
I had seen it at a 7-11 in Hawaii. I had heard about it and even gave the ingredents as something of a gag gift to a Hawaiian co-worker (whom actually seemed to think it was a good gift).
The turning point was when a mother of my daughter’s friend gave her one recently and she loved it. The mother in turn gave us our own musubi maker when she returned from a recent trip to Hawaii.

So now the gauntlet had been offically thrown. Seemed simple; sushi rice, nor and cooked spam (yes I did have to go buy the Spam as I had not had any in last 10 years or so).
Here it is after I have pressed the rice with the musubi maker, laid in the spam (just fits in the plastic ring) and pressed the top layer on.

Ok so I think I will proceed with a little caution as far as busting these out at parties but it was pretty darn good. And now I have one more thing I can make my daughter for lunch (up to 5 and counting).

Ha! This is great! Necessity is always the mother of invention. Such a great way to keep the light touch alive in the kitchen with your kids. Well done, Jeff.
That is really cool! I think it looks great. I wish my kids were a little more adventurous with their eating.
hi daddy it was very yummy!

You can also add some soy sauce and brown sugar as you fry the spam for a teriyaki flavor or scramble a couple eggs, cook omelet style, and put on spam before rolling the nori. MMMM!! I did serve this occasionally at parties in Michigan and it was fun to see the different reactions!
I found your post when I was doing a search for spam musubi maker. =) ALOHA!
Thanks for offering your blog to the guild. You have so much good to say and I’m enjoying every bit.
What a treat!
